LEED-Certified Facade Projects: Verified Case Records
Four delivered projects carry verified LEED certifications, from a Gold-certified double-skin envelope in Shanghai to a Platinum-certified free-form theatre in Qingdao and two BIPV-integrated buildings. Every figure below comes from the project record already published on this site — this page assembles the certification evidence in one place.
Project, certification, and what the facade contributed
| Project | Certification | Facade contribution | Key documented figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Senlan International Plaza, Shanghai | LEED Gold | Double-skin facade, ventilated cavity, automated external blinds | 7 EA points; whole-wall U-value 1.6 W/m2K; 28% energy savings |
| Qingdao Grand Theatre | LEED Platinum | Free-form steel-and-glass facade, triple low-E, gradient fritting | 16 EA points; SHGC 0.62 to 0.38, VLT above 0.55 |
| Suzhou International Science Plaza (2024) | LEED (certification track) | 6,200 m2 double-skin BIPV facade, monocrystalline outer skin | 3 EA points; 740 MWh/yr; 18% of base load |
| Nanjing Green Finance Centre (2023) | LEED Platinum | 3,800 m2 semi-transparent CdTe BIPV atrium and south facade | 16 EA points; 285 kWp; 20% visible transmittance |
How each envelope earned its points
Senlan International Plaza (LEED Gold). A double-skin facade with a ventilated cavity and automated external blinds. The thermal-break system achieved a whole-wall U-value of 1.6 W/m2K, and energy modelling with IES VE demonstrated 28 percent energy cost savings relative to ASHRAE 90.1-2007 — contributing 7 LEED points under EA Optimize Energy Performance. The project, a Luban Prize winner in 2015, demonstrates the double-skin route to Gold across a dense urban site in Shanghai.
Qingdao Grand Theatre (LEED Platinum, 16 EA points). A free-form steel-and-glass envelope whose complex curvature required custom panel families with individually simulated glazing orientations. South-facing panels carry gradient ceramic fritting at 40 percent coverage, cutting peak SHGC from 0.62 to 0.38 while holding visible transmittance above 0.55 — the simultaneity of thermal control and daylight that earns both EA and EQ credits at once.
Suzhou International Science Plaza (2024). A 6,200 m2 double-skin BIPV facade with monocrystalline silicon on the outer skin and low-E triple glazing inside. It generates 740 MWh annually — about 18 percent of base electrical load — contributing 3 LEED points under EA Renewable Energy Production. Hanart held the full scope: structural analysis, thermal modelling, electrical design, module procurement from LONGi Solar, installation and a 25-year performance guarantee. Simple payback was 6.8 years on a 25-year NPV of USD 1.42 million.
Nanjing Green Finance Centre (2023). Semi-transparent CdTe BIPV glazing across 3,800 m2 of atrium skylight and south-facing curtain wall, achieving 20 percent visible transmittance while delivering 285 kWp. Coordinated with First Solar and JinkoSolar for rapid shutdown, arc-fault protection and cloud SCADA monitoring, the building reached LEED Platinum with 16 total EA points — evidence that power-generating envelopes and occupant daylight can coexist.
Where facade engineering converts to points
These projects illustrate a general pattern: the facade carries more certification leverage than any other single system. EA Optimize Energy Performance awards up to 18 points on whole-building energy cost savings relative to ASHRAE 90.1-2016, and the facade dominates three of its inputs — envelope U-factor, SHGC and visible transmittance. A facade upgrade from baseline double-glazed clear to high-performance triple low-E can shift a building from 5 percent energy savings (1 point) to 35 percent (12 points). EA Renewable Energy Production adds up to 3 points for BIPV, MR up to 2 points for EPD-documented materials and recycled content, EQ Daylight up to 3 points on spatial daylight autonomy and EQ Thermal Comfort 1 point on surface temperatures. Thermally broken frames that keep surface temperatures within 3 degrees of air temperature protect the comfort credit; fritted or high-SRI spandrel finishes feed the heat-island credit.
LEED certification questions, answered with project records
Four delivered projects: Senlan International Plaza (LEED Gold, 7 EA points), Qingdao Grand Theatre (LEED Platinum, 16 EA points), Suzhou International Science Plaza (3 EA points from BIPV) and Nanjing Green Finance Centre (LEED Platinum, 16 EA points).
Through the EA Optimize Energy Performance credit, which awards up to 18 points on building energy cost savings. Facade U-factor, SHGC and visible transmittance are three dominant model inputs, so glazing specification can shift a building by 11 or more points.
Whole-wall U-values of 0.9–2.2 W/m2K depending on climate and system. Senlan International Plaza documented 1.6 W/m2K on a double-skin envelope with thermal breaks and automated blinds.
Yes. The Suzhou International Science Plaza BIPV envelope generates 740 MWh per year — 18 percent of base load — and earns 3 points under EA Renewable Energy Production, with 6.8-year payback.
Yes — Qingdao Grand Theatre combined free-form geometry with per-panel solar simulation and gradient fritting that cut SHGC from 0.62 to 0.38 while holding VLT above 0.55, and certified LEED Platinum.

How facade teams lose LEED points, and how to avoid it
The most common certification gap is glazing specification that is modelled as high-performance but installed as standard. The model assumes SHGC 0.25 and the site receives SHGC 0.40, because the specified low-E coating was value-engineered to a single-silver product without updating the energy model. Hanart avoids this by locking glazing datasheets into the contract specification and conducting pre-fabrication optical verification with a portable spectrophotometer on the first production batch.
A second gap is missing EPD documentation at the MR credit review stage. Contractors collect EPDs from major suppliers but forget secondary materials — sealants, gaskets, pressure plates — that together account for 5–10 percent of material mass. Hanart includes EPDs for all facade materials above 1 percent of total mass in the project package, preventing credit loss at review.
