BIPV Solar Facade Systems

Turn your building envelope into a power plant. Hanart engineers building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) curtain walls and solar glazing that generate clean electricity without compromising facade performance, fire safety or design intent.

Why BIPV

Power generation meets facade engineering

Clean Power

Photovoltaic glass replaces conventional spandrel and vision glass, producing renewable electricity for lighting, HVAC and EV charging with no additional land.

Engineered as One System

PV modules are engineered into the curtain wall frame — not bolted on afterwards. Wind, seismic, thermal movement and water management are designed together.

Fire Compliance

Certified photovoltaic laminates (Class B-s1,d0) with fire-stopping at floor edges and spandrels, tested per EUROCLASS or local standards.

Design Freedom

Semi-transparent, colored, patterned and frameless PV glass options let architects compose solar fields as an aesthetic facade feature, not a technical eyesore.

Engineering

From yield model to installed system

Every BIPV facade starts with a solar yield study using your orientation, shading context and local climate. We then engineer the framing, cable routing and inverter integration with the curtain wall structure — all coordinated through a single point of responsibility.

  • Solar yield modelling and payback analysis
  • String layout, DC cabling and combiner integration
  • Thermal behaviour and ventilation behind PV modules
  • Shading coordination with architectural fins and louvers

Safety First

Fire safety engineered into the system

Photovoltaic modules introduce electrical and fire risks that a conventional curtain wall doesn't have. Hanart coordinates fire testing of the complete assembly — PV laminate, framing, cables and fire-stopping — and verifies compliance with the local code of your project country.

  • Certified PV fire ratings (B-s1,d0 typ.)
  • Fire-stopping at spandrel and floor edges
  • DC disconnect and arc-fault protection
  • Approved by local fire authority per project

FAQ

BIPV facade questions, answered

A BIPV (Building-Integrated Photovoltaics) solar facade replaces conventional facade materials with photovoltaic modules that generate electricity while performing as the building envelope — providing weather-tightness, thermal insulation and daylighting in addition to power generation.

A south-facing BIPV curtain wall in most climates generates 90–150 kWh per square meter of facade per year. For example, a 4,000 m² solar facade can produce roughly 400,000–600,000 kWh annually, enough to power 100–150 homes.

The installed cost of a BIPV facade is typically 20–40% higher than a conventional glass curtain wall. The premium is offset by electricity savings, government feed-in tariffs or net metering, and green building certification incentives, giving typical payback periods of 5–10 years.

Yes. Hanart specifies photovoltaic modules with certified fire ratings (typically Class B-s1,d0 per EN 13501 or equivalent local standards), tested in the completed facade assembly with fire-stopping at spandrel and floor edges as required by local codes.

Yes — this is a growing combination. PV modules on the outer skin of a double-skin facade generate power while the cavity vents heat away, which keeps PV operating temperature lower and improves yield by 5–10%. Contact our double-skin facade team for a feasibility review.

BIPV facades require periodic cleaning to maintain yield — typically 1–2 cleanings per year in most urban climates, which can be combined with building maintenance access. Electrical systems (inverters, DC cabling) follow standard PV maintenance programs. Hanart provides a full O&M manual and optional maintenance contracts with every BIPV project.
